National Speed Limit Register

The NZ Transport Agency is currently developing a National Speed Limit Register, which will provide a technology-enabled, maps-based central source of all fixed speed limits for roads in New Zealand.

Speed limits, and communication of those limits to road users, is core to road safety. Speed limit data is used by the public, enforcers and increasingly by intelligent systems in vehicles. The National Speed Limit Register will make it easier for people to access and utilise that data.

The register will enable organisations responsible for speed management to more easily comply with the Setting of Speed Limit Rule and Speed Management Guide, update and share speed limit data, and make more informed speed management decisions.

The development of a national register contributes to the Transport Agency speed management programme. This programme is part of Safe Networks which will rapidly deliver proven safety interventions and safe and appropriate speeds on high risk routes across New Zealand. While the register will not change how speed limits are set, it will provide a national picture of speed limits and inform wider speed management work.

If you have any questions or would like any further information, please email NationalSpeedLimitRegister@nzta.govt.nz

Have your say on the introduction to the draft data standard

One of the benefits of the register is that third party data consumers will be able to easily access consistent speed limit data from one electronic source. As the register is developed, the Transport Agency will seek feedback to ensure it meets the needs of data consumers and other interested parties. We are currently seeking feedback on the introduction to the draft data standard.
